Golden Shore Wetlands CleanUp

Hello GSA Bloggers,

Here is a message from grad student, Mike Nichols concerning the Golden Shore Wetlands CleanUp:

Hey all -

I spoke with LB parks and recreation about coordinating a cleanup for the Golden Shore Wetlands, downtown LB by the Catalina Express launch. In conjunction with the El Dorado Nature Center, on February 20th (Saturday from 10 AM - 12 PM) they will make that area available for clean up!
Since the last rains the place is pretty bad and could really use some TLC. I was down there the other day and there were tons of doves in the grass by the shoreline wading through all kinds of trash.

It would be great if we could get some people down there to help out.

Thank you.

First Meeting for Spring 2010

Thank you to all the students who attended our first GSA meeting tonight! It was great to see our returning members of the GSA as well as our potential new members. Thank you Dr. Thien for advising our club and thank you Dr. Jocoy for the information about the LINK Housing internship opportunity. Participation from students and faculty are what make the CSULB Geography Student Association strong.

A lot of great ideas were shared tonight and will factor into our plans for the semester. We are here to expand our cultural perspective as students free of the binding environment that academia may often create. Sometimes it's cool to hang out and learn something without having to write a two-thousand word reflection paper. I hope you all share your passion for growth and experience with the GSA as we start our Spring semester!

SAVE THE DATE: Our Cultural Tasting will be February 25th at 7:30 pm The Location will be posted soon. Please E-Mail us - CSULBgsa@gmail.com to reserve your seat.

Please tell us what you want from the Geography Student Association. Post ideas, thoughts, reflections and whatever else you would like to say. The GSA BlogSpot is for everyone so lets have fun with it. :)

We have a number of exciting events planned for you this semester, including fundraisers, cultural nights, and more day hikes! We hope that you will join us, as it is your participation that makes our organization strong.

As it is the spring semester, keep in mind that we will also be holding a contest for the 2010-11 GSA t-shirt design, and holding elections for next years officers at the end of the semester. We are excited about bringing in new officers and members, so that we can make next year as great as this year has been. Be sure to let us know if you are interested!

Geographers, Burgers and Vets

GSA, Burgers and Vets

- By JP Cordero

DSC_9449.JPG

Geography students shouted out food orders Wednesday, November 11th as we volunteered our services at a Veterans Day event which was held at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Center for the National Guard. “Hot dog and hamburger combo!” could be heard clear across the base while Geography Student Association volunteers took on the heavy task of feeding thousands of hungry veterans and their families.

Smiles were plentiful as thanks were given to the men and women who served in the US armed forces. Hot grease attempted to burn through my plastic sanitation gloves as I stacked burger upon burger onto plates which were handed out for free to all veterans and any one who was hungry. The line for our tasty sensations was almost one-hundred meters long and snaked around the outdoor dining area filled with men and women decorated by metals and ribbons received in all wars fought from World War 1 up to Operation Iraqi Freedom.

At times it was unnerving to see the occasional M-16 assault rifle shouldered by some of the active members of the National Guard but once they were eating my worries dissipated. Working along side the men of The Elks Lodge in Garden Grove was a real treat in that we were consistently entertained by their anecdotes of time spent in our nation’s service and humored by their silly antics.

Dr. Unna Lassiter headed our mission to feed all our hungry veterans and she reminded us of the importance of recognizing such an important day. With the help of our beloved professor and the GSA our mission was a success! It came as no surprise when we were invited to come back for next year’s Veterans Day event to once again feed the Vets.

Study Session Reminder

Study Session Reminder: Tuesdays 2:30-4:30 PM in LA4-207 for GSA Members Only!!

Sunday, October 25, 2009

Note from your President:

Just a couple of quick reminders:
Firstly, our next meeting is this Thursday, October 29th at 5 PM in LA4 100.
Secondly, although we have a handful of folks committed to helping out, we are still looking for more volunteers for our Veterans' Day Event on November 11th, where we will carpool to the Base in Los Alamitos (Joint Forces Training Base 11206 Lexington Drive in Los Alamitos). We will be there early, between 9-10AM to set up and serve a BBQ lunch to the veterans! Please email us ASAP if you are interested!
Thirdly, the annual Geography Awareness Week is just around the corner (NOV. 9-12), and we are looking for volunteers to help out with the Photo Contest. The GSA will need volunteers for the following phases: A.) manning our table (taking shifts to oversee our t-shirts, promoting the club!!)B.) preparing the photos (includes categorizing the pics, slipping them into plastic protectors, and labeling)C.) setting up (includes bringing out/taking down the display boards, pinning up photos onto the display boards, etc.) ALSO, DON'T FORGET TO SUBMIT YOUR PHOTO BY NOVEMBER 3rd...the earlier the better!!
**confirm with your individual professors whether or not you could get EXTRA CREDIT for participating in the photo contest!**
That's it for now, I'm looking forward to seeing you all soon!! Please don't be afraid to email us with any questions, concerns, suggestions, etc.
Thanks for all of your support,
Christine Pham
GSA President
